OED visits new head of Webcor’s new San Jose office
The new manager of Webcor’s year-old San Jose office is young in years, but seasoned in the company and the world of large-project construction. Senior Vice President of South Bay operations for Webcor, Jitendra (Jit) Pahilajani started with the company as a project engineer in 2004, right after earning his master’s degree in structural engineering at Arizona State University. He has served in multiple roles and divisions, most recently as vice president of preconstruction and estimating for Northern California.
“Jit has long been a real spark plug for us, and his considerable work in and around Silicon Valley has resulted in excellent project outcomes and client relationships,” said Jes Pedersen, Webcor president and CEO. “He has worked both in the field managing projects and on the operations and business development side, leading project pursuits, preconstruction, and client relations. We are thrilled to have him growing our presence and teams out of the San Jose office.”
Visiting with Jit recently at the Webcor office at One Almaden, a delegation from OED picked his brains about the company’s achievements in San Jose, and his vision for the next few years.
“Being back in San Jose is a great pleasure for me,” he said. “My career at Webcor has included the North San Jose Samsung project, San Jose State University, Oracle, Axis and The 88, and we are looking to bid on many of the exciting developments now being planned in San Jose. And this is such a good market right now!”
Jit is optimistic about the long-range business prospects in the Bay Area, with bioscience and tech as drivers. While some companies have been committing to large new projects, others are waiting for construction cost pressures to decline to make commitments – which means more work for Webcor.
The San Jose office is Webcor’s fourth office, joining Alameda, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Webcor was founded in San Mateo in 1971 and has delivered more than $2B worth of construction in Silicon Valley. Since its opening last year, the San Jose office now employs 30 people and is adding staff to its construction and estimating teams.
In addition to the Samsung’s headquarters in North San Jose, contracts won by Jit’s estimating teams include work on the California Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley, San Francisco’s newest luxury condominium high-rise The Avery, UC Merced’s expansion project doubling the size of the campus, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Biosolids Digester Facilities project, Oceanwide Center in San Francisco, Menlo Gateway phases 1 and 2, and Hotel Nia.
Jit is very positive on San Jose, especially the advantages of having an office downtown.
“We love being in an urban environment,” he said. “We can take the whole team over to San Pedro Square Market for bonding, the commutes are great, and we are looking forward to even more big-city amenities within walking distance.”
OED staff took the opportunity to share info with Jit areas that we are working on, including the downtown investment attraction, Opportunity Zones and California’s Use Tax Incentive program.
