San Pedro Square is having a MOMENT

Councilmember Raul Peralez (D3) welcomes MOMENT to Downtown San Jose

With the cutting of the ribbon at MOMENT at San Pedro Square, the many speakers truly represented the network of partnerships that made the project possible in Downtown San Jose.

Chuck Hammers, San Jose businessman and president of the Downtown Property-Based Improvement District, introduced the key individuals who were involved in “putting four retail locations into 12 parking spaces” in the city garage facing San Pedro Street.  Partners include the Downtown Association spearheaded the idea; the City’s departments of Transportation, Public Works, Economic Development and Planning, Building and Code Enforcement along with City Council District 3 staff. Over three years, the organizations worked to ensure the project was managed  to meet city’s codes, and to balance the concerns of Downtown residents and businesses, while addressing traffic issues.  The Knight Foundation provided a grant through its Knight Cities Challenge, while San Jose Made leveraged local artists and entrepreneurs and recruited the retailers. And then there was the concept design by Gensler, architectural services by Eaton Hall Architecture, and construction by TICO Construction.

SJDA Street Life Manager Jason Su, and Blage Zelalich, Downtown Manager, City of San Jose OED – celebrating their joint project, MOMENT

All the speakers agreed that MOMENT is perfectly positioned to elevate these already-amazing businesses, brands and talent to newer and greater levels of visibility, while making San Pedro Street more vibrant and active. MOMENT is part of SPSQUARED, a SJDA initiative designed to activate, elevate and celebrate San Pedro Street within San Pedro Square.

SJ Made shared that the retail opportunities in MOMENT would be offered on rotation, featuring San Jose artists, craftspeople and retail businesses, providing a new shopping experience several times a year. The first retailers in MOMENT are:
