Silicon Valley’s Airport is Boosting the Region’s Economic Growth

New airline service boosts any community’s economic development. It generates new business opportunities, enhances trade, creates local jobs and stimulates tourism. This is definitely the case for Mineta San José International Airport (SJC), where something special is happening. The SJC economic development engine has shifted into overdrive, helping power the City of San José and the surrounding Silicon Valley region to new heights. SJC now welcomes roughly 50 percent more annual passengers than just four years ago, an accomplishment made possible by the airport’s extraordinary growth in new nonstop service.
SJC is America’s fastest-growing major airport over the past two years, adding new nonstop service to destinations where local travelers want to go like London, Shanghai, Frankfurt, Vancouver, Newark and Baltimore-Washington, to name just a few. The incredible growth continues in 2018, with 10 new nonstop routes already scheduled to launch in the first half of the year to popular business and leisure destinations like Orlando, Mexico City and San Antonio.
In 2017, Aeromexico and Frontier Airlines inaugurated service at SJC, bringing the airport’s list of airlines to 16. Frontier is adding five additional routes in April. Southwest, meanwhile, launches a major Silicon Valley expansion this spring with 80 additional flights a week, including eight new nonstop destinations – six of which were previously unserved at SJC by any airline. Included in that list is Cabo San Lucas, marking first-ever international service offered by Southwest in San José. The route is also already served by Alaska Airlines, which continues its own rapid growth at SJC.
Silicon Valley business travelers are especially excited about our airport’s growth in long-haul nonstops – by June of 2018, for example, four different airlines will operate daily nonstop flights from San José to the New York City area.
All this growth, especially in nonstop service to Europe, Asia and the East Coast, further positions SJC as the smart choice for savvy Silicon Valley travelers, who appreciate the virtually fog-free airport’s superior on-time record, easy passenger experience and convenient location.
SJC continues working tirelessly to add ever more service, ensuring San Jose and Silicon Valley travelers have easy, efficient and enjoyable air access to the rest of the world.
