Wrike Brings its Momentum Back to Downtown San Jose
On April 18, Wrike celebrated the grand opening of its new global headquarters in Downtown San Jose. A global leader in online project management, the 11-year old company now boasts more than 15,000 customers and one million active users, with 500+ employees across its worldwide locations.
Although the company has for three years been included in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500, Wrike’s origins were not that of the flashy Silicon Valley startup. Wrike first opened its doors at 84 West Santa Clara Streetwith just four employees. “Five years bootstrapped is a long time in Silicon Valley,” recalls Andrew Filev, Founder and CEO of Wrike. “But I felt it was important to make sure the model was working before I took money to scale. For five years, it was just a few of us.”
In the summer of 2013, Wrike secured its Series A funding from Bain Capital, and was advised that relocating north would afford access to a larger talent pool for scaling its operations. In January 2014, Wrike moved its office (then 10 people) to Mountain View. Over the next two years Wrike’s customer count would grow by 300%, and the company grew its local head count to more than 60. During this period the company opened additional offices in Dublin, Ireland, and San Diego to help serve customers in global markets and scale faster.
Despite the advice that prompted the company’s initial move north, it became increasingly clear that a much larger talent pool laty to the south and that Downtown San Jose provided many of the amenities that a high growth startup like Wrike needs to sustain its growth. In late 2016, Wrike moved back to Downtown San Jose at Ten Almaden, a decision fueled by real estate economics, a “common-sense commute analysis” and the desire to relocate into an urban setting that better appealed to the company’s younger workforce.
The company’s new global HQ is a stunningly rehabilitated three-story building right on the light rail line on North 2nd Street, across from the construction site of one of downtown’s newest residential towers, The James.
“When you factor in Caltrain, proximity to multiple freeways, SJC airport firing on all cylinders and adding routes all over along with the eventual BART buildout, Downtown San Jose starts to look like a real powerhouse” says Filev.
Echoing City Councilmember Khamis’ remarks at the opening, Wrike is fulfilling our hope that companies “start, succeed and stay in San Jose!”
